Goatskin Shades on Moroccan Lamps

Have you ever taken a look at the shades that come with Moroccan lamps? While you might find traditional cloth shades, you might find a few goatskin shades to make your lamps look more natural. A goatskin shade is a choice that uses leather that comes off of a goat’s body. This leather is heated and toned to create an attractive texture while retaining a natural-looking color. The leather is also hardened to make it easier for the shade to stay intact. The best part of this type of shade is that it gives your lamp an organic and natural design that is different from what you might expect out of a cloth or fabric-based shade.

While this is a beautiful choice to find on many Moroccan lamps, you might want to be careful when using such a shade. While you can use a candle or traditional light bulb on a lamp with this kind of shade, you should keep the light source from getting too close to the shade. In addition, you also have to avoid using the shade near an intense heat source like an open window that lets in the sunlight or even a grate that lets out heat from your HVAC unit. These extreme amounts of heat could cause the skin to become discolored. There’s even the risk that the leather will shrink up and tighten itself around the body of your lamp, thus keeping the candle or bulb inside your lamp from being able to display itself appropriately.
